Scicli
is among the most historical cities in southeast Sicily, lying in a natural setting of plains, hills and sea where man’s labour, history, tradition and the taste of products made with care give life to a product with an unmistakable taste and high sugar levels. The unique charcteristics of the Date Tomato are made possible by its close links with its place of origin and the knowledge and sensitivity of its producers, whose families have worked the land and brought forth its fruits for generations. The city of Scicli , as a baroque city of the Val di Noto, has, since 2002, featured in the UNESCO World Heritage List. In Scicli the Via Francesco Mormina Penna stretches to the nearby Beneventano palace, perhaps the only one in Sicily to display fantastic decoration, in an urban setting where churches rise alongside patrician buildings of late Baroque age. Three churches (St John the Evangelist, St Michael and St Teresa) are from the 18th century. Scicli represents a considerable example of reconstruction after an earthquake, successfully carried out at a high level of architectural and artistic achievement. Keeping within the late Baroque style of the day, it also depicts distinctive innovations in town planning and urban building. Today the town is the largest producer of this variety of tomato in Sicily.
